Plaintiffs sue to recover the reasonable value of services rendered by them as attorneys to the defendant, a domiciliary of Illinois. Service of the summons and complaint was made on the defendant in Illinois. He moved to dismiss the complaint on the ground the court lacked jurisdiction over him.

The motion essentially was based on the allegations that the defendant, as a domiciliary of Illinois, had never transacted business in New York. Admitting that his attorneys1 in Illinois had come to New York in 1966 and retained the plaintiffs to bring an action on two judgments which he had…
