OPINION

SERNA, Justice.

{1} In this extraordinary writ proceeding, we are called upon to clarify how the target of a grand jury investigation may alert the grand jury to the existence of exculpatory evidence. In doing so, we are mindful of the delicate balance we must strike between the constitutionally independent powers of the grand jury, district attorney, and judiciary.
