Appeal from a judgment of the County Court of Washington County (Leary, J.), rendered March 24, 1989, upon a verdict convicting defendant of the crimes of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, burglary in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

Defendant was convicted of, among other things, attempted murder in the second degree as a result of a brutal assault upon his estranged wife occurring on June 21, 1988 when he entered her home through a cellar window in the early morning hours and then attacked her. Defendant beat the…
