COFFEY, Circuit Judge.

Defendant-Appellant Ruben Hughes (“Hughes”) was indicted and charged in Count one with conspiring to possess cocaine and cocaine base with intent to distribute, in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 846, in Counts two through five with distributing cocaine or cocaine base, in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1), and in Count six with possessing a firearm as a felon, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1). 1 At the conclusion of a jury trial, Hughes was found guilty on each of the counts, and on January 13, 1999, the court imposed a life sentence on the drug counts, 2 as well as a…
