delivered the opinion of the court:

A jury convicted defendant, Theodore Knox, of two counts of first-degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1) and two counts of armed violence (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 33A — 2). The armed violence counts were vacated, and defendant was sentenced to natural-life imprisonment without parole for the first-degree murder convictions. On appeal, defendant contends that (1) evidence of his gang affiliation was irrelevant and prejudicial, resulting in an unfair trial; (2) the trial judge violated his right to counsel…
