The father of two minor children appeals the district court’s order granting the adoption of the children by their stepfather because the father had failed or refused to assume the duties of a parent for two consecutive years prior to the filing of the petition. K.S.A. 59~2136(d). The case was transferred to this court pursuant to K.S.A. 20-3018(c). For the sake of clarity and compliance with Supreme Court Rule 7.043 (1994 Kan. Ct. R.
