The following chronology of dates and events is deemed essential to an adequate understanding of the controversy here to be resolved.

On May 7, 1956, Edward MacClain and his wife, Berniece, executed a promissory note wherein they promised, for value received, to pay Northwestern Loan & Investment Company, hereinafter referred to as Northwestern, the sum of $13,000 with interest thereon from “the date hereof, until paid, at the rate of 2% per month computed upon unpaid balances.” Specifically, in the note they promised to pay “35 consecutive installments…
