MURRAY, Justice.

On March 16, 1988, the State of Rhode Island filed a five-count criminal information against the defendant, Frederick Taylor Bilal, and the case came to trial in Providence County on July 5, 1990. Prior to impaneling the jury, the defendant moved to suppress certain evidence, alleging that the seizure of this evidence was the product of an illegal arrest made in violation of the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution and article I, section 6, of the Rhode Island Constitution.
