¶ 1. Derrick. Newell was convicted in the Walthall County Circuit Court, in 1998 for conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Immediately prior to his trial, Newell had been acquitted of the crimes of armed robbery, aiding and abetting, and accessory after the fact. Following his conviction, he was subsequently sentenced as a habitual offender to life in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) without.the possibility of early release.
