On April 10, 1891, Alphonse J. Stephani, then a resident of New York, was convicted of murder in the second degree and sentenced to be imprisoned for life. He was first confined in Sing Sing Prison. He remained there until January 8, 1903, when he was transferred, pursuant to chapter 520 of the Laws of 1899 (now Correction Law, § 383), to Dannemora State Hospital, an institution for insane convicts.
