By multicount indictment No. 3854/85, dated August 13, 1985, the defendant was charged with grand larceny in the second degree (two counts), grand larceny in the third degree, and insurance fraud in the first degree pursuant to Penal Law *284former § 176.20 (four counts).1 The transactions which underlie the charges against the defendant arise from the submission of various fraudulent claims under two policies of automobile insurance issued by Arnica Mutual Insurance Company and Nationwide Insurance Company (hereinafter Nationwide).
