WAGNER, Chief Judge:

Appellant, Dominic Stewart, shot and killed Trent Walker following a gun battle which started in Maryland and ended in an alley in Southeast Washington, D.C. Stewart contended that he shot Walker in self-defense. Stewart was indicted for first-degree murder while armed (D.C.Code §§ 22-2401 and -3202 (1996)), assault with intent to kill while armed (D.C.Code §§ 22-501 and -3202 (1996)), possession of a firearm during a crime of violence (D.C.Code § 22-3204(b) (1996)), and carrying á pistol without a license (D.C.Code § 22-3204(a) (1996)).
