Defendant New York Blood Center, Inc., doing business as The Greater New York Blood Program (the Center or blood bank), is a New York not-for-profit corporation which collects blood primarily from volunteer donors and distributes the blood and blood products to hospitals and research facilities for transfusions and biomedical research. In 1985, it supplied blood contaminated with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) to a hospital, which in turn transfused it to Sarah Bernardo (Bernardo), who later developed Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)…
