After a bench trial defendant, William Varellas, was convicted of forgery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 38, par. 17 — 3(a)(2)) and theft by deception (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 38, par. 16 — 1(b)(1)) and was sentenced to an extended term of 10 years’ imprisonment.
