Petitioner Herman G. Martin was convicted of conspiracy to commit extortion (Pen. Code, §§ 182, 518), conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon (id., §§ 182, 245, subd. (a)), assault (id., § 240), and murder in the second degree (id., § 187); he was found to have committed the conspiracy offenses and the murder while armed with a firearm (id., § 12022, subd. (a)).
