Appellant Gerardo Venegas was charged with intoxication assault, failure to render aid, and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, alleged to have been committed on January 1, 2014, in Webb County, Texas. On May 20, 2016, after several days of trial, and after the case had been submitted to the jury, Venegas voluntarily absconded. The trial proceeded in his absence.
