OPINION OF THE COURT

Casey, J.

The dead body of 10-year-old Andrew Pitkin was found in a wooded section of the Town of Peru, Clinton County, at about 10:00 p.m. on April 12, 1984. Andrew had sustained 33 stab wounds, at least two of which caused his death, estimated to have occurred sometime between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on the same day. Andrew, who lived two houses from defendant’s home, had been a playmate of defendant’s eight-year-old sister, Erin, and had been playing with her in the neighborhood earlier on the same day.
