Joseph Eugene Spence and Glenn O’Neil Williams, in separate indictments, were charged with the murder of Alton Artamous Maynard. The cases were consolidated for trial. As to each defendant, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree and did not recommend that the punishment be imprisonment for life. In accordance with these verdicts and the provisions of G.S. 14-17, the trial judge, as to each defendant, pronounced a judgment imposing a death sentence.
