Dwayne Jamae Jackson shot Michael Mayes and Louis Cabello in the parking lot of Westgate Apartments in Garden City on March 20, 2001. Mayes died as a result of his wounds, but Cabello survived. Jackson later admitted shooting the two men, but claimed that he did so in self-defense. A jury convicted Jackson of two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.1 Following his conviction, Jackson filed a motion for new trial asserting that several improper communications between the bailiff and the jury had unfairly chilled…
