The dispositive issue in this appeal is whether the trial court abused its discretion by denying the defendant’s motion for a mistrial after the court, in the jury’s presence, engaged in a colloquy with the state’s principal witness. After a trial by jury, the defendant, Lawrence Smith, was convicted of assault in the third degree in violation of General Statutes § SSa-bl,* 1 and was sentenced to one year of imprisonment. He appeals from this judgment. We find error.
