PAGE, Justice.

On September 26, 2007, Jarvis Jermaine Atkinson was found guilty by a Ramsey County jury of two counts of first-degree murder, one count of second-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and one count of attempted second-degree murder for the shooting death of Gary Sligh and the wounding of Emmanuel Paye. The trial court convicted Atkinson of one count of first-degree murder for the death of Sligh and imposed the mandatory sentence of life in prison.
