A jury convicted defendant of two counts of first degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(3)), aggravated battery based upon great bodily harm (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 12 — 4(a)), aggravated battery of a child (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 12— 4.3(a)), and cruelty to children (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 23, par. 2368).
