Hackman v. Commonwealth

Supreme Court of Virginia

Decided January 11, 1980No. Record 790365PublishedCited by 26 opinions

1Opinion of the CourtCochran, J.

Tried upon an indictment charging him with perjury in violation of Code § 18.2-434, Kent James Hackman was found guilty by a jury, which fixed his punishment at confinement in jail for nine months and payment of a fine of $1,000; judgment was entered upon the verdict. We granted Hackman a writ of error limited to the questions whether the court erred in denying Hackman the right to discover certain statements that were in the possession of the Commonwealth, and in instructing the jury that it could consider Hackman’s prior conviction of a crime of moral turpitude as affecting his credibility.
