This appeal raises a question regarding the operation and effect of Mass.R.Civ.P. 54(b), 365 Mass. 821 (1974).

The plaintiffs here seek damages on various theories from various defendants on account of serious defects in a house purchased by them. Their complaint, in twelve counts, was filed in the Superior Court in March, 1978. One of the defendants, Aldicor Construction Corp. (Aldicor), which had built the house and appears to have been an important player in this drama, never appeared and was defaulted in January, 1980.
