After a jury trial, defendant, Charles E. Hutson, was found guilty of cruelty to a child (111. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 23, par. 2368) and battery (111. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12 — 3(a)(1)).
