WOODALL, Justice.

Anthony Richard Perch is an inmate at Holman Correctional Facility. In May 2008, he sent a letter to the clerk of the Jefferson Circuit Court, requesting, pursuant to § 36-12-40, Ala.Code 1975, copies of certain documents from the files in three cases involving criminal charges against a person who had testified as a witness for the State in the trial in which Perch was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
