The county district courts were courts of limited rather than general jurisdiction; they were created by statutes and not by the State constitution. N.J.S.A. 2A:6-1 et seq., see Rutgers v. New Brunswick, 42 N.J.L. 51 (Sup.Ct.1880). The statute which defined the jurisdiction of the county district court limited the actions cognizable therein to those which had dollar amounts in controversy of no more than $5,000 and which had “a civil nature at law.” N.J.S.A. 2A:6-34(a).
