—The Begister of the City and County of New York is a county officer (Const. 1846, art. 10, § § 1, 2; Rev. Stats., Pt. 1, ch. 12, tit. 2, art. 8). It is made the duty of the Begister of the City and County of Mew York to provide the necessary books for recording deeds and mortgages, and books for general indices. A like duty is imposed on the clerks of the several *24counties. In the case of Bright v.
