The terrible ravages of the cholera in the memorable year of 1833 left many infant children in Lexington and the County of Fayette in a helpless state of total orphanage and destitution, dependent on that city and county for shelter and maintenance. Most of them were females, as unfit for a poor-house as it was unbefitting their age and sex.
