On the day of the shooting, Ms. Mayer deposited her child at her mother's house at 7:05 a.m. As Ms. Mayer was leaving, she saw what she thought was a couple arguing across the street from her mother's house. Seconds afterwards, Ms. Mayer heard Ms. Hedgepeth screaming and then saw Ms. Hedgepeth struggling with the suspect, who was standing next to Ms. Hedgepeth's car. Ms. Mayer ran toward the commotion.
