AINSWORTH, Circuit Judge:
This is a maritime negligence suit brought by Simmie L. Walker against Baltic Shipping Company, owner of the M/V ATKARSK, to recover damages for physical injuries Walker sustained when he slipped and fell down a ladder of the M/V ATKARSK. At the time of his injury, Walker was working on the M/V ATKARSK as a longshoreman winch operator, employed by J. P. Florio & Company, Inc., an independent stevedoring contractor hired by Baltic to load and unload cargo from the vessel.
