The plaintiff urges that the verdict for the defendant in this suit- for libel was against the weight of evidence, and that the court erred in allowing the jury to consider the meaning of the libelous words in such a way that the justification proven was sufficient to permit a verdict for the defendant. The hurtful feature of the article was the intimation that the plaintiff, being a powerful political leader, protected vice in .the eighth assembly district for his own pecuniary advantage.
