In this lawsuit, the plaintiff (a national union) is petitioning the court to compel the defendants (two railroads) to arbitrate a dispute over certain labor-protective provisions in a collective bargaining agreement. The plaintiff is the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, AFL-CIO (commonly referred to as the IAM); the defendants are Meridian & Bigbee Railroad Company and M & B Railroad, L.L.C. 1 The IAM bases this lawsuit on the Railway Labor Act, as amended, 45 U.S.C.A. §§ 151-188 (commonly referred to as the RLA).
