Defendant was indicted at the March term, 1875, of the St. Louis Criminal Court for the murder of Dora C. Broemser. He was convicted of murder in the first degree, and the judgment was reversed on appeal. Two mistrials were then had. At the October term, 1879, defendant pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree, and was sentenced to imprisonment in the penitentiary for twenty-five years. On appeal, this sentence was reversed and the cause remanded.
