During the night of April 11-12, 1977, a nineteen year old woman was brutally stabbed to death. Following his indictment, the defendant, Richard Ostroski, was charged with her murder in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 1977) § 53a-54a (a) and (c).1 After a trial by a panel of three judges of the Superior Court,2 the defendant was found guilty and *536sentenced to a prison term of not less than twenty-five years nor more than life.
