KANNE, Circuit Judge.

In the summer of 1983, defendant William Stillwell, Sr. attempted to end his financial woes by burning down his Alsip, Illinois house and collecting the insurance. Stillwell offered $5,000.00 to his codefend-ant William Stevens, and a friend named Raymond Schultz, to set the fire. Stevens and Schultz both agreed as the list of participants grew. In preparation for the arson, Stevens asked his friend, Richard Pis-chler, to get some paint thinner. Pischler in turn had his girlfriend, Virginia Harnish, buy five cases of paint thinner from the Calumet Paint & Wallpaper Store.…
