The defendant was tried before the Court of General Sessions, under an indictment, which, omitting the purely formal parts, reads as follows: “That one Hiram Jeter, late of the county and State aforesaid, on the 26th day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-five, with force and arms, at Spartanburg Court House, in the county and State aforesaid, did feloniously, willfully, and maliciously set fire to a certain house, to wit: the fodder house and corn crib of one Charles Smith, and by the…
