SONENSHINE, J.*
We are asked to determine whether the trial court erred in terminating a natural father’s parental rights by considering only *68the best interests of the child without first considering whether an award of custody to him would be detrimental to the child. We conclude Civil Code section 46001 is applicable to all section 7017, subdivision (d) termination proceedings and reverse the judgment.
