Before the court is a petition seeking to appoint the petitioner as guardian of the person of the respondent pursuant to article 17-A of the Surrogate’s Court Procedure Act. The petitioner alleges that the respondent is incapable of autonomous decision-making by reason of a diagnosis of intellectual disability and therefore requires the appointment of a guardian. If the petition is granted, the respondent will lose all legal authority and control over decisions regarding herself and her affairs, including medical decisions about her own treatment…
