On January 22, 1998, defendant-appellant Ramon Dueño pleaded guilty to each count of a three-count indictment charging him with being a felon in possession of a firearm, see 18 U.S.C. § 922(g); possessing an unregistered firearm, see 26 U.S.C. §§ 5861(d) & 5871; and transferring a firearm without having met the requirements of 26 U.S.C. § 5812, see 26 U.S.C. §§ 5861(e), 5871, and 5812. The charges to which Dueño pleaded arose from his March 14, 1997 sale of a sawed-off shotgun to an undercover police officer. At the time of the sale, Dueño had a number of prior criminal…
