At about 11:30 p.m., on an evening in late August, a group of men, using three automobiles, were on their way down through Long Island to stay overnight at a hotel prior to participating in a tuna fishing tournament on the following day. The first car was 100 to 200 yards in advance of the second and the second about seventy-five feet in advance of the third. The Sunrise Highway, on which they were travel*372ing in an easterly direction, was a four-lane highway — two lanes going east and two lanes going west.
