LYNCH, Circuit Judge.

James Michael Kater, who is serving a life sentence for murder and kidnapping, appeals from the district court’s denial of his petition for habeas corpus relief under 28 U.S.C. § 2254. Our review is subject to the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 (AEDPA), Pub.L. No. 104-132, 110 Stat. 1214 (1996).
