Pugh pleaded guilty to third degree assault for striking a King County Sheriff’s Department officer while the officer was escorting him from the McNeil Island Special Commitment Center to the King County jail. The trial court accepted Pugh’s guilty plea and entered judgment. Before sentencing, Pugh moved to withdraw his guilty plea and moved to proceed pro se. The trial court substituted Pugh’s counsel, then later allowed Pugh to proceed pro se with the newly appointed counsel acting as his standby counsel.
