On April 30, 1881, the relator, in the circuit court for the county of Newaygo, recovered judgment against the township of Brooks for an injury sustained January 12, 1880, by reason of a defect in a bridge in said township, which it was the duty of the township to keep in repair.

On January 6, 1881, the supervisors of the county of Newaygo divided the township of Brooks into two townships, — to one of which they gave the name of Garfield, while the other retained the name of Brooks.
