The State petitioned to adjudicate respondent, Matthew M., a delinquent minor. Then, pursuant to section 5 — 810 of the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 (the Act) (705 ILCS 405/5 — 810 (West 2000)), the State moved to designate the proceeding as an extended jurisdiction juvenile (EJJ) prosecution. The trial court granted the motion, and a jury subsequently convicted respondent of residential burglary (720 ILCS 5/19 — 3 (West 1998)).
