Previous to September 1, 1882, Matthew Millard had been engaged in mercantile and other business at Palo, Michigan, about thirteen years. He was then the owner of real estate and personal property; had been obliged to hire money to carry on his business, and procure securities on his paper when he obtained his loans. His father, Leander Millard, and an uncle by the name of Baltis Titsworth, usually signed for him when he hired money.
