The facts giving rise to this appeal are not in dispute. Following a jury trial, the defendant Jonathan Carter was convicted of second-degree murder. On March 3, 1998, he was sentenced to an extended term of 28 years’ imprisonment based on the trial court’s finding that the murder was accompanied by exceptionally brutal and heinous behavior indicative of wanton cruelty.
