The plaintiff, Molten Metal Equipment Innovations, Inc. (“MMEI”), brought this patent infringement action against the defendants, Metaullics Systems Co., L.P., and Metaullics Systems Co. (collectively, “Metaullics”), alleging that Metaullics had infringed several of the claims of U.S. Patent No. 5,203,681 to Cooper (“the Cooper patent”). After lengthy pre-trial proceedings, the parties tried the issues of literal infringement and infringement under the doctrine of equivalents to a jury.
