The defendant, Ivery J. Williams, was charged with the offense of theft of property valued in excess of *150 in violation of section 16(a)(2) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1975, ch. 38, par. 16 — 1(a)). Following a jury trial he was found guilty and sentenced to one to three years in the Illinois State Penitentiary.
