Following a jury trial in the circuit court, defendant was convicted of first degree murder pursuant to section 9 — 1(a)(1) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(1)) and sentenced to life imprisonment.
